The Water Fight – John Dickson

I went to school at Texas A&M University in the early 1970′s. In the Corp of Cadets, I had some wild experiences, one of which was called the “water fight.” These water fights were not just a few guys squirting each other with water guns or cups of water. These were semi-organized water wars, on an apocalyptic scale, involving thousands of cadets and great rivers of water. They would start with an upperclassman ordering a freshman to stand on top of his dining room table during the evening meal and shout at the top of his lungs, “Water fight!” At that announcement, thousands of cadets would leap to their feet and pour out of the dining hall and race back to their dorms. In their rooms, they would grab their three-gallon metal trash can and head back out in front of their dorm. Selected crews of cadets would fill 55-gallon garbage cans with water from the shower stalls and pour the water out the windows. We would gather under those windows and fill our trash cans under the waterfall cascading down from four stories of dorm shower rooms. Then we lined up in two opposing skirmish lines directed by upperclassmen armed with bull horns, on the roofs of the dorms. When the command to “charge” was given, thousands of cadets would raise a war cry and hurl themselves at the opposing side with reckless abandon, loosing a tsunami of water at each other. The wall of water knocked people down and swept others off their feet.

The melee of fun and frolic continued as cadets ran back to the waterfall to refill their trash cans and enter the charge again. It was noisy, clamorous, wild, undignified, exciting and tremendously fun, just like in heaven when the roaring voice shouted out “Halal! in Revelation 19. Maybe there was no water involved in the heavenly celebration, but the excitement level was certainly similar. What fun they have in heaven!

On earth, however, we seem to limit our times of halal to the secular side of our lives. Exuberant praise is, in fact, a normal human behavior. When we receive some long-awaited good news – Jimmy passed his algebra exam – we wave our hands in the air and shout, “Way to go, Jimmy!” When we win the football game, we high five and yell and act wild. Only in church and in the public library do we restrain ourselves. We humans have the natural tendency to get stagnant in our religion and to get our worship down into a set pattern – something manageable. We don’t like surprises. When we become sedentary, our zeal cools off and we become less and less effective. Our devotion gravitates toward our liturgy (whether denominational or charismatic) instead of our living relationship with God. It’s all right that the dead don’t halal, but as for the Church, it’s time.

  1. I am curious as to why you used the word “halal” here. Thanks.

    • Amanda,

The word “halal” in the old Hebrew means to praise, boast, be boastful, to make a fool of, or to act madly, act like a madman…the point being that we can do this for sports and other things in the earth, but seldom do we do it for our God!

      Thanks

    John,
You are the best story teller, truely a gift. I felt like I was right there in Texas amidst the water fight.
I agree, let dance, song, and uncontained worship break out like a flood before our King in church at home, anywhere really:) The heavans will join in chorus and then we will have a Holy party…dah dah da da dahh I’m lovin it.

  3. Yes i agree.Worship should be as easy as breathing. My understanding of worship is just putting Him first in all that we do.Acknowledging that apart from Him we can do nothing an in and through Him we can do all things. I find that i am becoming more vocal in my worship and even at work I speak and sing my praises to God in a place where my colleges do not no Him but respect me for the God that i beleive.I found that by willing yourself and doing it daily it becomes easier and it becomes part of your vocabulary. i It rubs off on yourfamily an soon your household is worshipping and praising the Name of Jesus. Thanks 4 ur awesum God inspired website.Australia

  4. It has taken me over 30 years to learn how to praise, and I am still learning. The “frozen” traditional background that I was raised in, along with the traumas of my childhood, robbed me of the ability to feel joy… never even knew what it was until I began to learn how to praise. The Word made me free, more and moreso as I pressed into it! When I could do nothing – not even read and understand the Word itself, praise broke me free and brought me out! Glory of Zion’s worship has played a huge role in that freedom I now have, and continues to be a standard that I seek to emulate. I believe in VIOLENT PRAISE, dancing on the head of my enemies, and singing songs of worship in the darkness and then standing back and watching it turn! Praise God for His patience to teach us what we need to learn. Thank God for churches that press into the Sound of Heaven and set an example for others line me! I love the Lord for bringing me joy and peace and teaching me how to rejoice in His love out LOUD! This 61 year old is even learning how to dance to the Song of all Songs!

  5. This is so exciting!!!!! Can’t wait to read the new book!!!!

  6. I love it. Worship is very freeing!

  7. Your painted word about the water fight will contiune to bring joy and smiles to all that read. The month of Alul was the approperiate time to share this story. The earth is the Lord’s and I rejoyce in HIM.
The High Praises of God are continuity being birth from the Throne Room of God at GOZ. How exciting……When I was attending GOZ, last year, praising God and entering into worship was so much fun and strengthing to my entire being. The joy of the Lord is truly my strength and praise/dance goes before the battle. Dance will tear down strongholds and set capitives free. I am free to dance……

  8. John I feel likeIi know you from watching the noon prayer times and so many other webcasts. I appreciate your spirit.you seem truly humble and of course thats what it takes to be a good worship leader. Words can never descrbe what all of you at Glory of Zion means to me and how my life is changing because of you all. I, like the other lady,am 61, but you know your spirit man does not grow old, so sometimes I still feel like a child. Next to the Trinity, you guys are truly my life line. I support the ministry financially and prayfully. Don’t ever stop. and your water story was right on the nose. God Bless!!!!
